A legend is available for the currently loaded map layers. You can swap between the optional layers and legend by clicking on the "Map layers" or "Legend" hyperlinks.

The maximum scale that the maps can be zoomed to is determined by the species conservation status. Common species can be viewed at higher resolutions than threatened species.

Species search

Before you can draw distribution maps you will need to select a species to map. The species selection menu works in two ways. You can type part of a bird's common name, or you can type in the RAOU/Atlas number. Wait a moment, and a list of search results will display.

Use your keyboard arrows or mouse to select the correct species. The map will then reload. When you change the selected species, the map extent remains the same.

Location search

The location search box is located in the footer of most pages where the Birdata maps are displayed. Type part of a location name and wait a few seconds. A list of matching places will display. Select one of these and the Birdata map will zoom to that location.

Maps

The Birdata maps work in a similar fashion throughout the site. To control the zoom level and location of the map, select a tool from the "map tools" menu. The "zoom in" tool can be used by clicking on the map (to zoom in increments), or you can draw a box on the map to zoom to this extent. The "zoom out" tool works by clicking on the map to zoom out in increments. All the other zoom tools work when they are selected in the menu.

The "recentre" tool will centre the map wherever you click. The "move map" tool will pan the map in any direction. Click and drag the map in your preferred direction. The "reset" tool will zoom to the entire continent.

The Birdata maps include a number of optional layers that can be turned on and off by clicking on the check boxes. Once you click a box, the map will automatically reload. Some layers are not available at particular scales.
